The Benefits of Gum Disease Treatment — article cover

Untreated gum disease threatens more than your teeth; it is linked to serious health problems throughout the body. See why prompt periodontal treatment pays off.

Overview

Periodontal disease, better known as gum disease, is an infection in which bacteria attack the gum tissue and the bone holding your teeth in place. It gets its start when plaque and tartar are allowed to build up along the gumline. Daily brushing and flossing, routine dental visits, and staying away from cigarettes go a long way toward keeping it from ever developing.

The Two Stages

Gingivitis

In its earliest phase, gum disease shows up as irritated gum tissue: redness, puffiness, and tenderness are the hallmarks. Common culprits include plaque left behind by incomplete brushing, hormone shifts, some medications, and a diet lacking key nutrients.

Periodontitis

If gingivitis is ignored, it can progress into periodontitis, a destructive stage that breaks down gum tissue, bone, and the fibers anchoring your teeth. At this point bacteria can also slip into the bloodstream, where research has tied them to heart disease, stroke, and diabetes complications.

Why Treatment Is Worth It

Lower Infection Risk: Acting early stops bacteria before they can trigger broader health problems and keeps the disease from advancing.

A Better-Looking Smile: Treating recession rebuilds the gumline and improves the overall appearance of your teeth.

Lasting Oral Health: Professional care brings the bacterial infection under control, guards against flare-ups, and protects your teeth for the long term.
