Root canal therapy targets problems deep inside the tooth, in the pulp: the soft inner tissue housing the nerves, blood supply, and connective fibers that keep a tooth alive. When decay or trauma lets infection or inflammation reach this chamber, the result is often intense pain and escalating complications.

The treatment itself is methodical: the dentist removes the damaged pulp, then thoroughly cleans and disinfects the hollow interior before sealing it against future bacterial invasion. Far from being exotic, root canals are among the most routine procedures in dentistry, and they are typically the final option standing between a troubled tooth and extraction. The reward is keeping your own tooth, with its comfort and function restored.

When Is It Necessary?

A root canal enters the picture when a tooth's pulp becomes inflamed or infected, usually because of deep decay, a crack in the tooth, or a physical injury. Once bacteria breach the inner chamber, pain follows, and an abscess can develop.

Waiting rarely helps. Untreated infection can spread past the tooth itself into surrounding tissue, creating health problems well beyond a toothache. Saving the natural tooth also protects your bite, your neighboring teeth, and your long-term oral health, which is why dentists work so hard to avoid extraction.

Step by Step: What Happens During Treatment

The appointment starts with a careful exam and X-rays to map how far the damage or infection extends. Local anesthesia numbs the area completely, and the dentist then creates a small opening through the top of the tooth.

Working with fine specialized instruments, the dentist extracts the infected pulp while protecting the healthy tooth structure around it. The canals are then cleaned, shaped, and packed with gutta-percha, a rubber-like biocompatible filling. Finally the opening is sealed to lock bacteria out. Many patients return for one more visit to receive a permanent crown or filling that fully restores the tooth.

  • Pulp capping: a protective seal placed over exposed pulp can sometimes keep the tooth vital, but only when nerve involvement is caught very early
  • Home remedies: options like clove oil may temporarily soothe discomfort, but no natural remedy can cure an infected pulp
  • Monitoring: in borderline cases with little discomfort, careful observation is possible, though only under a dentist's supervision, since delay carries genuine risk
