An implant replaces the whole tooth, root and all: a biocompatible titanium post integrates with your jawbone, then supports a custom crown built to match your natural teeth. Implants keep the jawbone healthy, leave neighboring teeth untouched, and restore full biting strength, which is why dentists consider them the gold standard in tooth replacement.

How a dental implant works
An implant has three parts. A small titanium post is placed in the jaw and acts as the root; over three to six months the bone grows onto it in a process called osseointegration. An abutment connects the post to the third part, a custom crown made to match your other teeth. Because the replacement is anchored in bone, it feels and works like a natural tooth and keeps the bone around it healthy.
Who is a candidate
Most healthy adults are. You need enough bone to hold the implant (a bone graft can rebuild it if not), healthy gums, and a commitment to daily cleaning. Smoking and uncontrolled diabetes lower success rates, so we talk through them honestly at your consultation. There is no upper age limit; implants are placed successfully well into a patient's eighties.
Your options
- A single tooth. One implant and one crown, with no need to grind down the neighbouring teeth as a bridge would.
- Several teeth. Two or more implants can support a bridge, replacing three or four teeth without an implant for each.
- A full arch. All-on-4 places four to six implants that support a fixed full set of teeth, or implants can secure a removable denture so it no longer moves.
How treatment works at ToothDocs
- Consultation and imaging. We assess your bone, gums and bite and agree the plan and the cost in writing.
- Placement. The implant is placed under local anesthetic, with sedation available. If the tooth is still present, extraction, any grafting and placement can often happen at one visit.
- Healing. Three to six months while the bone fuses to the implant. A temporary tooth is provided where appearance matters.
- Restoration. The abutment and final crown are fitted and the bite is checked.
- Maintenance. Normal brushing and flossing, plus regular checkups where we monitor the implant and the gum around it.
Implant care at ToothDocs is a team approach. Surgical placement is carried out by our periodontists, and planning and the final restoration are led by Dr. Steven Kauftheil, our founder and a prosthodontist, the specialty devoted to replacing missing teeth.
Recovery
Most patients compare the days after placement to a routine extraction: some swelling and soreness, a soft diet for a few days and over-the-counter pain relief. Many return to work the next day.
How long implants last
With good home care and regular checkups, implants routinely last decades and often a lifetime. The crown on top can wear like a natural tooth and may eventually be replaced, but the implant itself normally does not need to be. Gum health is the main thing that protects your investment, which is why we keep implant patients on a regular maintenance schedule.
Cost and insurance
The starting price shown above is for a single implant. Your written estimate itemises the post, abutment and crown and any grafting, so you can see the full cost before you begin. Some dental plans contribute to part of implant treatment, and financing options are available. See insurance and financing.
Why patients choose it
- Looks, feels, and functions like a natural tooth
- Preserves jawbone and facial structure
- Doesn't rely on or damage neighboring teeth
- Can last a lifetime with proper care

Frequently asked
What affects how long a dental implant lasts?+
Oral hygiene, bite forces, bone health, and not smoking are the biggest factors. With good home care and regular checkups, implants routinely last decades, often a lifetime.
Is getting an implant painful?+
Placement is done under local anesthetic (sedation is available) and most patients compare recovery to a routine extraction, managed easily with over-the-counter pain relief.
How long does the whole implant process take?+
Typically three to six months from placement to final crown, most of it healing time while the bone fuses to the implant. If a bone graft is needed first, add a few months. Where it matters, you have a temporary tooth throughout.
Is an implant better than a bridge?+
An implant stands on its own, so the neighbouring teeth are left untouched, and it preserves the bone beneath it. A bridge is quicker and relies on the teeth either side. Which is right depends on your bone, the condition of the adjacent teeth and your budget, which is exactly what a consultation settles.
Can I get a tooth out and an implant on the same day?+
Often, yes. When there is enough healthy bone and no active infection, the implant can be placed in the socket immediately after the extraction, and sometimes a temporary crown is fitted the same day.
